Bari is the name given to the second largest city in Southern Italy. It is the capital city of the Apulia region, on the Adriatic. Barium is the ancient Latin name that was given to Bari. During Roman times Bari was something of a crossroads between the Via Traiana and the old coastal road. The harbor has been mentioned as far back as 181 BC and was likely to have been of significant importance during ancient times. It is still an important fishing port to this day. In 852 AD, this city became a seat of Saracen rule. In 885 AD, it was home to the Byzantine governor and has been destroyed several times since then. Nowadays, visitors come to admire Bari rather than to conquer it. Many take the opportunity to stay at some of the comfortable hotels Bari has to offer.
Bari's old town is located on the northern peninsula, along with the Cathedral of San Sabin and the Basilica of San Nicola. The Murattiano town lies to the south and benefits from a promenade, excellent shopping facilities and includes the very center of the city. The hotels Bari has available are located in all areas and offer the convenience of being within easy reach of excellent transportation links and local attractions. There is much to see and do here without the area being as overdeveloped as many cities in Italy. Here you can enjoy a taste of real Italy without fighting the crowds and cameras all day long. Due to its coastal location, Bari offers wonderful sea views, ancient architecture and a chance to sample truly authentic Italian cuisine.
Founded in 1087, San Nicola church, received saintly relics from Lycia. These relics now reside below the altar within the church crypt. Many religious tourists and lovers of history enjoy visiting this and other ancient buildings in the area. A good deal of the hotels Bari has available are housed within ancient, historical buildings, adding extra interest to your stay. By far the most popular historical building in Bari has to be the Castel del Monte Bari, built during the 13th century and commissioned by Emperor Frederick the second. Work on the castle began in 1240 and took ten years to complete. Over the centuries this castle has suffered from considerable losses to its interior furnishings but still remains an impressive building. One of the main differences between this castle and others built around the same time is that this castle has no moat or drawbridge. Historians attribute this to the fact that the castle was never intended to serve as a defensive structure.
Hotels in this region benefit from all the modern facilities one would expect, including en-suite rooms, air conditioning, comprehensive restaurant facilities and a range of additional conveniences including laundry, maid and porter services. Visitors can choose from single, double or twin occupancy rooms with hotels on the coast benefitting from spectacular sea views and a close proximity to sea tours and excursions.
Every September, Bari plays host to the Fiera del Levante; the biggest trade fair of the entire Adriatic. This draws exhibitors from all over the Mediterranean, Italy and even further afield. The chief focus of the fair is industry and agriculture though it also has an area devoted to handcrafted merchandise known as the Fair of Nations. Bari is also the venue for the annual Levante International Film Festival. This is very much a film festival for lovers of the art house movie. Independent films are screened here all day long during the festival and visitors flock to the city every November from far and wide to take advantage of this once a year event.
As one would expect from this southerly region, the weather here is very Mediterranean. It is extremely pleasant throughout the year with temperatures in summer climbing well into the 80s, though cooled by the Mediterranean breezes, so it never becomes oppressive. This region makes for an ideal winter getaway and is still largely undiscovered as compared to the busier regions of Italy. If you intend to plan your visit to coincide with one of the annual festivals, it is worth booking in advance as many rooms are pre-booked by festival visitors at these busier times.
